Tim Cook and PM Modi to meet in New Delhi to celebrate India’s first Apple Store


On Wednesday, April 19, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook is set to meet India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and deputy IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Cook is visiting India to inaugurate the country’s first ever Apple retail stores in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Tim Cook expressed his excitement about the upcoming visit on Twitter, “Hello, Mumbai! We can’t wait to welcome our customers to the new Apple BKC tomorrow.”

The visit foresees high ambitions from the organisation in the Indian market for smartphones where Apple has been actively increasing its assembly through contracts in India and has been boosting exports. 

iPhones are primarily assembled by Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron. They are Apple’s contract manufacturers and Apple aims to assemble iPads and AirPods, along with iPhones in India, the world’s second-largest market for smartphones. x`

India Cellular and Electronics Association’s data suggests that around $9 billion (₹738 Crore) worth of exports of smartphones were established from India between April 2022 and February 2023 and more than 50 percent of the exports were under iPhones.

With the initiation of India’s first Apple retail store, which will be located at the Jio World Drive mall in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex and its second store in Select Citywalk Mall in Delhi, Apple puts forth the clear idea of expanding its market in India and working extensively towards the manufacturing of its products. 

Currently, the Apple plant in India manufactures iPhone 14 and the older models of the variant but with the expansion, we can expect the plants in India to assemble Pro variants as well.

On April 18, the maiden retail outlet for Apple will open in Mumbai which will see the arrangement for Mumbai Rising, a skillset series organised from April 18 to May 25. 

The series aims at featuring local artists from various skills in the domains of film, art and music sharing and teaching these skill sets. Apple Music has already set up a playlist under the title Apple BKC, which is based on the city.
