Belgium’s first ‘oak’ anniversary, 80 years after shotgun wedding | News


Belgium has marked its first oak wedding anniversary as Eduard Cuyvers, 99, and Angeline Haeseldonckx, 97, celebrated 80 years as man and wife.

The couple married as teenagers in January 1943 when their country was under Nazi occupation. That month marked a turning point in the Second World War, when Germany’s General Friedrich Paulus surrendered to the Soviets at Stalingrad.

Eduard and Angeline’s marriage has been a successful one blessed with four sons, ten grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

“Are we still in love with each other? Be sure of that,” Angeline said. “Every pot has a lid. Fight? We never have. And after all these years we still haven’t finished talking.”
